O. B. 26th Jan 1914. The 2nd Battalion saw action at the evacuation from Dunkirk in June 1940. They landed on Sword beach on 6th June 1944 as part of the intended advance on Caen, and saw heavy fighting. It was at this point that Walter was captured, probably wounded (Date of action given as 7 6 44). He was transferred to
